Harrison’s Clocks (A post from ancient history)

— We’ve kept this post as-is even though we wrote it about 6 months ago and only just got around to posting it —

A few weeks ago we went to London on a bit of a pilgrimage of sorts. Our goal was to see Harrison’s amazing clocks in Greenwich. We went in to Kings Cross and met up with Clive who joined us for the day.

On our way to meet Clive, Jan got chatting to Jessie on her birthday. I was a bit bored and took this nice pic of her.

First up we saw this little display outside the observatory. It had the standard measurements for an inch, foot etc and a 24 hour clock.

Everybody seemed super keen to cross the meridian line and there was a huge crowd of people gathered to have their photo taken there. We were more keen to see Harrison’s clocks to we legged it inside to the museum.

We saw all of Harrison’s 4 times pieces, H1, H2, H3 which were all working and were really amazing. Perhaps even more amazing was seeing the first three clocks, which, together took something like 3 decades to make, and then seeing H4, which was so tiny in comparison, (essentially a big watch) but only took a few years once Harrison had the idea.
