Easter Adventures

We’re just back from a pretty busy Easter trip. It was kind of three trips in one really, camping at Wingan Inlet, catching up with our friends at Point Hicks, and then off to the mountains.

The holiday started with a bit of a late night arrival at the Wingan Inlet campground. As we cooked up our dinner we listened to loads of little creatures rustling in the surrounding heath, and the rather unsettling sound of dingos howling to each other close by. Next morning we headed off on a circuit walk around the headlands at Wingan. After a short section on boardwalks we found ourselves outside the inlet at a beautiful beach.

Jan couldn’t resist her beachcombing instincts

Me enjoying the sunshine

We saw swarms of fish in the waves on this beach, and the grassy dunes at its top were full of little wrens. After this beach, the path headed westwards across Rame Head, weaving its way through banksia heath and up to a high point where we got a good view. Along the way we had an encounter with a swarm of spotted pardalotes and I got a bit excited when I managed to snap a close-up of one of these tiny birds.

What a cutie!

After a long and very enjoyable day of walking we ended up back at the Wingan Inlet Campground, and drove over to catch up with our friends at the Pt Hicks lighthouse. Despite arriving ridiculously late we still got a warm welcome with wine and chats about the promise of what to do the next day. Much of the next day was a blur of delicious food, watching waves crash onto the shore and loads of nice long chats. In the afternoon there was a small debarcle involving a lamb roast and a stew .. oops … but after that we went off to scale the Dunes at Pt Hicks.

The vastness

The next day we said goodbye to our friends and headed off to the mountains to meet my Mum and Dad near Mt Buffalo. The highlight of this part of the trip was a walk in Buffalo national park. It seemed as though we found another amazing natural thing to marvel at every few meters. Jan loved the colours on the trunks of the trees and took this shot.

Burnt snowgums

And at some points we got amazing views across the high plains.

And in lots of other places we saw tiny little beautiful things, like this fungi

At one point we stopped for lunch near a rather beautiful bog and listened to the frogs as dad went chasing Sphagnum moss.

A perfect spot

And to cap off the walk, at the end we all got to see a flame robin! It was an awesome easter :)!!
